About Us

Founded in 1964, Rockville Community Nursery School is a cooperative, parent-owned preschool in which parents, teachers and children participate together in an exciting and nurturing first-school experience. We are located near Montgomery College in Rockville on the beautiful Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rockville campus.

Art, music, dance and play fill our classrooms and outdoor spaces with the happy sounds of children learning. Our expert teachers provide tempting and developmentally appropriate opportunities through which each child grows at his or her own pace to a new maturity and sense of self-worth and self-direction.

What We Believe

We believe children learn best through play. Guided by The Creative Curriculum®, our classrooms nurture curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning. Research shows that purposeful play helps children build self-regulation, language, and problem-solving skills while deepening their understanding of the world. In our classrooms, teachers thoughtfully guide exploration so children take joy and ownership in their learning.

How We Do It

Parents and teachers team up to spark children’s curiosity and joy in learning about themselves, their friends, and the world. When parents share their time and talents, whether helping in class or behind the scenes, they show just how much learning matters. The result? A preschool experience that’s fun, meaningful, and rewarding for everyone!

The Benefit of Diversity

The rich mix of ethnic and cultural backgrounds among RCNS families brings a special vibrancy to our school, connecting children with the diverse world around them. Many parents speak languages other than English at home, and our parent-participation model helps those children thrive. Parents build close relationships with teachers and one another, supporting language learning in meaningful ways. English-only families, in turn, enjoy early exposure to world languages as classmates’ parents share songs and play in Spanish, Mandarin, Amharic, Czech, and more. And yes—our potlucks are truly something to celebrate!
